Very interesting to see a piece of your family history. In case you don't know Infantry Rgt 226 was part of 79 Infantry Division and at the time of his death were located on the Don steppe before they went to Stalingrad in October/November.
Here is his entry in the Volksbund Database...Attached Files

If your mother contacts this organisation... http://www.dd-wast.de/ ...she might very well be able to get more information on his military service. There is a thread here... http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=64548 ...that lists other organisations you can try to contact to get information.

I spoke with my mother about her family again. She told me that her mother had 5 siblings. 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
All three brothers died in the war.
From one of them I showed you the Wehrpass yesterday
I entered the family name "Handtrag" on the Völkerbund- site which the great hucks216(thank you so much again!) had shown me, see # 2. The two other brothers are there listed, too.
Hans Handtrag died 18. Februar 1944 in Pleskow, Russia
Herrmann Handtrag died 11. August 1944 in Pielnia, Poland
I think the family was confronted with 3 dead men pretty hard.

It would seem that Hans died in the Feldlazarett 269 which belonged to 269 Infantry Division. However this division was located in Norway at the time so it looks as if they left their Feldlazarett behind when they were sent to Norway in late 1942. Pleskau is now called Pskov and is about 170 miles from St.Petersburg (Leningrad). You should be able to find out their military service details by contacting the organisations linked previously.Attached Files
